In Her Own Words

My Dad and other ancestors must be given credit for what I am today: a creative. My rich heritage of artists and musicians have helped me sustain a way of life using my talents and passions.

While raising my children, I used my creativity and talents to become a stay at home working Mom. I was a pianist and loved music. No, that’s incorrect. I was consumed by it.

I loved Bach and Beethoven and Schumann and all the other classical musicians that influenced me while I created my watercolor paintings. I painted into the wee hours of the morning while my children slept. I joined Artists Societies and sold my paintings in Mall Art Shows (I even had a few stolen… now that’s a compliment!). I also started and ran a music school for years and taught piano and voice. Puppet shows for children with a custom made theater and puppets were always a holiday highlight. Humperdink’s Hansel and Gretel never sounded so great!

Along the way, I eventually channeled my creativity into the graphic design and web development profession and enjoyed a successful livelihood that enabled me to take an early retirement from my corporate 500 position.

Jewelry Design

My early retirement left me with a sense of reinvention. I wanted to try something new, something different, something I had not done before, but that something had to use my natural creative skills.

I’m not quite sure when I started toying with the idea of jewelry design. I really had little interest in wearing much jewelry and the idea that I was interested in designing jewelry perplexed me. Sure, I had the standard pearls, gold necklace, faithful watch, and birthstone s with matching earrings. But this kind of jewelry never really excited me, never stirred me. It was just there… like an old shoe sitting in my closet… safe and comfortable.

One day I cleaned out my old jewelry box. You know the kind… the one that you have in your closet or drawer with all those old trinkets you have saved from your childhood on: the stuff you could not bear to part with even though it was missing a stone, or a matching part. It struck me that all of the items I had treasured, were unique and one of a kind. They were different.Unusual. Odd. Beautiful. Rich. Elegant. Unforgettable.

Which led me to researching the history of Jewelry. Gemstones. Ancient Egypt. Metallurgy. Techniques. Styles. Trends. Jewelry Designer. I was hooked.

Reinventing Janice, Jewelry Designer and the birth of Wired For You

As a new Jewelry Designer, I set out to develop my own style of jewelry using old world techniques. My self imposed design guidelines would include creating unique designs using simple tools like pliers and files. For the most part, the jewelry designed would be assembled using cold connections (no soldering) and incorporating gemstones into the art would support the precious metal design. The metal would always be the focus, while the gemstone would compliment the design, like a twinkling star against a black night sky.

Soon, my family and friends took notice of all this new kind of jewelry I was wearing! They were astounded when I told them it was my own design, hand crafted by me. I was the jewelry designer! They encouraged me to continue my work, and quite frankly I was excited at the thought of opening up my own ‘store’ on the web. Gradually, I started getting requests to design and create a unique piece for themselves, for their loved ones, for their friends. Their encouragement and support helped me to launch Wired For You.
